Metropolitan Museum of Art
Armor Hall
New York, NY

Lighting Consultant: Steve Hefferan

Objectives:
Redesign and relight the hall for the museum's Arms and Armor Collection. Restore and update the three existing hanging light rings after almost 90 years. Add appropriate architectural uplighting, unobtrusively, to provide a light and airy ambience to this large public space, while projecting a controlled wash of light over its vaulted ceiling.

Execution: Rambusch removed the huge bronze light rings, dismantled and stripped them to raw metal, refinished them to exactly the chosen finish. Glass shades and components were precisely replicated. In addition, Steve Hefferan selected from the five unique Rambusch PAN-A-Lux Uplite fixtures, one which could deliver the photometric pattern required for the sorely needed, supplemental lighting component he envisioned. Selected were the versatile Rambusch PAL-88s, to be hidden in architectural coves between windows, to effectively cross-light the vaulted ceiling..

Results: The relighted hall, containing one of the museum's most popular collections, is winning plaudits for Steve Hefferan (IALD Award for Excellence) and has been featured in Lighting Design and Application. Combining the restoration of the light rings with architectural uplighting has resulted in a remarkably pleasant and inviting, luminous atmosphere.
